3 Tips to Overcome Social Media Fatigue

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

With more than half the world's population on at least one platform or another, it's more important than ever to stay active on social media! Not to mention it's also just a great tool for businesses today.

According to Search Engine Journal, there are 4.8 billion social media users worldwide, representing 59.9% of the global population. Not to mention there were 150 million new social media users between April 2022 and April 2023 – a 3.2% increase year-over-year.

"If we break those numbers down, it equals approximately 410,000 new social users every day – and 4.7 every second."

Hey guys! Hannah here - I've been working with business owners as a digital consultant and social media manager for years now and boy do I know about social media fatigue. I've experienced it, my clients have experienced it and my connections outside the industry have even experienced it!

For context: social media fatigue can be characterized by feelings of anxiety and being overwhelmed at the thought of interacting in the online community!

The social media landscape has bombarded us with more information than we know what to do with or can handle. Between managing the day-to-day of your social media, the never-ending stream of stories, updates, marketing efforts, checking notifications, checking messages, scrolling through feeds to make sure you haven't missed anything relevant going on in the community, and reading every headline, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed by social media overload.

Here are my top 3 tips to prevent social media burnout and fatigue for the average business owner doing their best!

Tip #1 - Step Away

Take a break. The world won‘t end, and your business will not fall apart! Step away, re-evaluate, and come back to it when you feel ready to hit the ground running. People who like your work and want to connect with your brand will stay with you and the ones that leave simply weren’t that interested to begin with!

There are other ways to connect with your customers online than social media! Try sending out a weekly newsletter, start a youtube channel, create a blog (like this one!) or pretty much anything along those lines to continue the flow of communication without exhausting yourself.

Tip #2 - Be Selective

My favorite tip! Be selective about the platforms you use. Unless you have a team of experts to help you manage your digital assets across every platform available, it is impossible to get informative and useful content out, at the right time, all the time.

If you have a preference for a particular channel, focus on it for a while and try and make meaningful connections there! I always tell my clients it’s better to have one channel where you are hitting it out of the park and to repurpose content from there than it is to stretch yourself thin trying to manage an unmanageable work load.

Tip #3 - Less Is More

It’s okay to only post when you want to communicate something! Feeling pressured to find multiple things to post about a day will add unnecessary work to your plate, and decrease the quality of outgoing content.

It is more important to produce consistent, high performing content than it is to post 3 or 4 low quality items a day to beat the algorithms. So, before you post ask yourself why am I sharing this? or what value does this bring my community?

Closing Statement: You Cant Give 100% All The Time

Social media is supposed to be a fun way to connect with your customers and keep them in the loop! It’s main purpose is to be a source of social interaction; not another job for you to stress about!

At the end of the day just remember it’s okay to take a break when you’re feeling tired, to only post when you have something you want to say, and to focus on one or two platforms that you enjoy.
